Pond Care Spring & Autumn Pond Sticks are designed to meet the needs of koi and goldfish in cool water. Spring and autumn are the cool-water seasons when pond fish activity is relatively low. Their metabolism is slower due to the cooler water temperature. In cooler water, 42° to 70°F (6° to 21°C) fish will feed but do not require a high protein food. Feeding excess protein does not benefit the fish and is released into the pond as poisonous ammonia. This is especially dangerous in cool water because the bacteria that comprise the biological filter are inhibited by the cooler temperatures.
