My overstocked 60 gallon tank uses an Emperor 400, and even though there are 30 fish ranging from 4 to 8 inches, the 400 keeps all waste levels down. I used bottled bacteria cultures to help start the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia dropped to zero after 2 weeks, Nitrite to zero after 3 weeks, and Nitrate to zero after 5 weeks. This was better than my non-biowheel filter, which took 2 months to cycle even though I used the same starter bacteria. As I added fish to the tank (4 per week) waste levels did not increase. The plastic filter casing was easy to modify with a hand saw, which I needed to do to the water return guides because of my 3-D background in the tank. I would only buy another filter if it had a bio-wheel.
